Dans Beyrouth, ville enfouie sous les bombardements intenses, j’ai découvert, dans notre grenier, une grosse caisse comportant une vaste collection de vinyles. Cette dernière avait été rapatriée d’Afrique, au décès de l’ami de mon père à qui elle appartenait. Étant une adolescente curieuse mais surtout à la recherche d’une oasis auditive, pour fouir le bruit quotidien des bombes, j’ai commencé à fouiner dans la caisse et à jouer les 45, 78 et 33 tours qu’elle contenait. Je les jouais l’un après l’autre, malgré le grésillement comme friture causé par les rayures des sillons ou le gondolement, j’en suis même arrivée à briser l’aiguille de notre tourne-disque.
Jadis, j’étais déjà accro à la musique noire américaine, nonobstant le fait que je connaissais peu l’anglais, cela a sans doute été une bonne raison pour improviser ou fredonner des onomatopées sur des mélodies que j’appréciais. J’ai alors commencé à enregistrer des cassettes de mes artistes préférés que je donnais à un ami guitariste dans le but de monter un répertoire et de chanter en autodidacte.
Mon histoire avec le jazz et mes tours de chant ont débuté dans les abris, lorsque je chantais tout mon soûl pour divertir les voisins regroupés pendant les bombardements, pour calmer leurs peurs et angoisses. Mon ambition était devenue d’introduire les miens à Billie Holliday, Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington, Satchmo, Miles Davis et bien plus encore.
Aujourd’hui, alors que j’ai immigré à Montréal, je suis graduellement revenue au chant, puisque c’est mon oasis de paix et de bonheur. Mon cheminement atypique m’a conduit à rencontrer des légendes du jazz avec qui j’ai collaboré voire enregistré quatre albums acclamés. On dit de ma voix qu’elle est aussi particulière que mon histoire l’est. Avec mes influences orientales, européennes et nord-américaines, je chante dans les quatre langues que je parle et suis pionnière comme chanteuse de jazz à travers le Moyen-Orient.
En juin 2023, je vais lancer mon cinquième opus, un hommage au grand compositeur et interprète franco-arménien Charles Aznavour. Cet album me permet de me reconnecter à ma culture française. Sur l’album je suis accompagnée d’une orchestration jazz interprétée par plusieurs célèbres musiciens.

In a war-torn Beirut, under heavy bomb shelling, I discovered a big box containing a vast collection of jazz vinyl in my attic. It belonged to a late friend of my father, brought back from Africa, and kept there preciously as a souvenir. Being a curious teenager about things and looking for an auditive escape away from the daily bombardments, I started digging in and playing the 45, 78 and 33 rpm records. I played them one after another, despite frying sounds from the significant scratches on the discs, to a point that they ruined our record player’s needle!

But I was already hooked to this black cultured American music, although I barely knew English back then to understand all the lyrics. This was the main reason that I hummed and scatted some onomatopoeias over beloved melodies. I then started recording tapes of my favourites artists that I gave to a guitarist friend to build a repertoire to start singing with him as a self-taught vocalist.

My story with jazz and performances really kickstarted in shelters when I sang my heart out to entertain neighbors gathered during bombings, to calm big fears and anxieties. It became my ambition to introduce my fellows to Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington, Satchmo, Miles Davis and much more.

Today, now that I immigrated to Montreal, I gradually went back to singing, since it is my oasis of peace and joy. My atypical journey led me to meet jazz legends with whom I worked and even recorded four acclaimed albums. My voice is said to be quite particular as much as my story is. With rich European, middle eastern and north American backgrounds, I sing in the four languages I fluently speak and am a pioneer jazz vocalist across the middle east.

In June 2023, I will be launching my fifth CD, a tribute album to late Armenian-French legend, Charles Aznavour. This album allows me to reconnect with my French culture. On the album I am backed by a refine jazz orchestration and many famous musicians.
