En 1993, il remporte le Prix de la Fondation Les Musiques du Monde, à titre de pianiste-compositeur lors du  Gala des Prix d’Excellence de la Culture. L’année suivante, il fait la tournée pancanadienne des festivals de jazz avec son ensemble de 10 musiciens : le Gilles Bernard Repertory Orchestra. Il a enregistré sept albums à son nom dont Le Chapeau de ma Sœur mit en nomination au Prix Opus pour le meilleur album jazz de l'année 2001 et son album Mot classé parmis les 10 meilleurs disques de l'année 1999 dans le cahier spécial Top Ten du journal Le Soleil de 1999. ART TV et TV5 diffusent un concert complet de son quartet enregistré au Domaine Forget en 2001. Il a joué au New Morning à Paris avec le groupe sénégalo québécois Dadjé, à Dakar avec l’Orchestre National du Sénégal et en Guadeloupe avec le groupe Kafé Ka Lévé. En mars 1999, la musique de Gilles Bernard fait l’objet d'une reconnaissance particulière à travers la série d’évènements prévus pour souligner l’ouverture de la Maison du Québec à Barcelone. En effet, les Catalans sont invités à apprécier le talent du pianiste dans le cadre d’une activité Le Québec à Écouter, du 15 au 28 mars 1999, visant à faire connaitre la musique d’artistes québécois sélectionnés pour la qualité de leur  œuvre. En 2004, il travaille à la réalisation de son propre studio d'enregistrement le Studio de l'Ours à Québec. Depuis, il y a enregistré cinq albums à son nom et plusieurs autres productions indépendantes. 

Au cours de sa carrière il a collaboré avec plusieurs musiciens parmi les plus réputés dans l’univers du jazz québécois et il a accompagné des musiciens de jazz de renommé international comme John Zorn (1985) ou encore le célèbre violoniste gitan hongrois Elek Bacsik (1991). En 1996 il a passé quatre mois en Italie et plus particulièrement à Milan, où il s'est produit sur plusieurs scènes de jazz avec différents musiciens. En 2002 il donne un concert au Centre Culturel de St-Pierre et Miquelon. Entre l'année 2001 et 2004, il écrit de la musique pour un octet composé d'un quatuor à corde et  d'un quartet de jazz qui fut présenté quatre fois en deux années consécutives au Théâtre du Petit Champlain et enregistré à deux reprises par Radio Canada FM.  De 2007 à 2013 Gilles Bernard se produit trois fins de semaine sur quatre avec son trio dans le réputé bar de jazz Le Sainte-Angèle situé dans le Vieux-Québec. En 2010 il participe au Festival de Jazz de Lamentin en Martinique avec le sextet du saxophoniste Maurice Bouchard. En 2012 il fait partie du concert Les Grands Québécois du Jazz présenté au Capitole de Québec avec son quartet et comme accompagnateur de la chanteuse Ranee Lee. En 2014 Gilles Bernard présente son nouveau quartet en concert double avec le Ellis Marsalis Quartet au Festival international de jazz de Québec. En 2016 il présente son album 4 Rue Durocher en concert au Festival international de jazz de Montréal et en juillet 2018 il lance son nouvel album Fréquence 119 en concert au Théâtre Petit-Champlain dans le cadre du Festival d’été de Québec.

In 1993, Gilles Bernard wins the World Music Foundation award as a pianist and composer during the gala of the Excellence in Culture Awards. The following year, he tours Canada’s jazz festivals with the Gilles Bernard Repertory Orchestra, his 10-musician ensemble. He records seven albums under his own name, like Le chapeau de ma Sœur (My Sister’s Hat), nominated at the Opus Awards for best jazz album of 2001, and his Mot (WORD) album, classified as one of the 10 best albums of 1999 in the Top Ten special section of the Le Soleil newspaper of 1999. Art TV and TV5 broadcast a complete concert by his quartet recorded at the Forget domain in 2001. He plays at the New Morning in Paris with the Dadjé group composed of Senegal and Quebec musicians, in Dakar with the National Senegal Orchestra, and in Guadeloupe with the Kafé Ka Lévé group. In March of 1999, Gilles Bernard’s music is the subject of a particular recognition though a series of events celebrating the opening to the House of Quebec in Barcelona. The Catalans are invited to appreciate the pianist’s talent during an activity The Quebec to Listen to, March 15 to 28, 1999 aimed to promote the music of Quebec artists selected for the quality of their work. In 2004, he worked on the realization of his own recording studio Studio de L'Ours in Quebec City. Since then, he has recorded five albums in his name and several others independent productions.

Throughout his career, he collaborates with many musicians amongst the most renowned of the Quebec jazz community, and he accompanies world-famous jazz musicians such as John Zorn (1985) and famous Hungarian gypsy violinist, Elek Bacsik (1991). In 1996, he spends four months in Italy, especially in Milan, where he performs in many jazz venues with different musicians. In 2002, he performs at the St-Pierre and Miquelon Cultural Center. Between 2001 and 2004, he writes music for an octet, composed of a string quartet and of a jazz quartet, that is performed four times in two years at the Théâtre du Petit Champlain and recorded twice by Radio Canada FM. From 2007 to 2013, Gilles Bernard performs with his trio three weeks out of four in the renowned jazz bar Le Sainte-Angèle, located in the Old Quebec. In 2010, he participates to the Lamentin Jazz Festival in Martinique with the saxophonist Maurice Bouchard Sextet. In 2012, he participates to the Great Quebeckers of Jazz concert presented at the Capitole de Québec with his quartet and as an accompanist for singer Ranee Lee. In 2014, Gilles Bernard presents his new quartet in a double concert with Ellis Marsalis Quartet at the Quebec City International Jazz Festival. In 2016, he presents his album 4 Rue Durocher in concert at the Montreal International Jazz Festival and in July 2018 he launches his new album Fréquence 119 in concert at the Théâtre Petit-Champlain as part of the Festival d ' summer of Quebec.
